Tutankhamen (died
c.1352 bc), Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, reigned
c.1361–
c.1352 bc. He abandoned the worship of the sun god instituted by
Akhenaten, reinstating the worship of Amun and making Thebes the capital city once again.
His tomb, containing a wealth of rich and varied contents, was discovered virtually intact by the English archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. Lord Carnarvon, who had sponsored the excavation, died the following year of blood-poisoning following a mosquito bite in the Valley of the Kings; this gave rise to the belief that to open the tomb had been unlucky.
