totalitarianism
totalitarianism Form of government in which the state tries to acquire total control of every aspect of social and individual activity or thought, by means of controlling the mass media, suppression of opposition, and the often violent use of the police or army. The term arose in the 1920s to describe Italian
fascism and has since been applied to Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and many other states. See also
