thyroid gland H-shaped gland of the
endocrine system. It lies in the base of the neck, straddling the trachea below the Adam's apple. It secretes hormones, principally
thyroxine that regulates growth and development. The enlargement of the thyroid gland, usually due to a lack of iodine in the diet, causes a swelling of the neck called a
goitre.
