sodium hydrogencarbonate (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3, popularly known as bicarbonate of soda) White, crystalline salt that decomposes in acid or on heating to release carbon dioxide gas, which explains its use in baking powder. It has a slightly alkaline reaction, hence its other main application, as an ingredient of indigestion powders and tablets.
