seismology Study of seismic waves, the shock waves produced by
earthquakes. The velocity of seismic waves varies according to the material through which they pass. Primary (P) and secondary (S) waves are transmitted by the solid earth. Only P waves are transmitted through fluid zones. Seismic waves are detected and recorded by
seismographs.
