polymerase chain reaction
World Encyclopedia | Date: 2005
polymerase chain reaction (PCR) Chemical reaction, speeded up by an
enzyme, that is used to make large numbers of copies of a specific piece of
DNA, starting from only one or few DNA molecules. It enables scientists to make large enough quantities of DNA to be able to analyze or manipulate it. PCR is extremely important in
genetic engineering and
genetic fingerprinting.
