lupus erythematosus Autoimmune disease affecting the skin and connective tissue. The discoid form causes red patches covered with scales, often on the cheeks and nose. The systemic or disseminated form varies in severity. Nine times more common in women than in men, the disease is treated mainly with corticosteroids.
