in vitro fertilization (IVF) Use of artificial techniques to join an
ovum with
sperm outside (
in vitro) a woman's body to help infertile couples to have children of their own. The basic technique of
IVF involves removing ova from a woman's ovaries, fertilizing them in the laboratory, and then inserting them into her
uterus. In
zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT), a fertilized egg (
zygote) is returned to the
Fallopian tube, from which it makes its own way to the uterus. The zygote then divides to form an
embryo. In
gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), the ova are removed, mixed with sperm, then both ova and sperm are inserted into a Fallopian tube to be fertilized in the natural setting. The first ‘test-tube baby’, Mary Louise Brown, was born in England in 1978. See also
