information technology (IT) Computer and telecommunications technologies used in processing information of any kind. Word processing, the use of a database and the sending of electronic mail (e-mail) over a computer network all involve the use of information technology. Television stations employ information technology to provide viewers with teletext services. IT has revolutionized retailing and banking through the development of bar codes. In manufacturing, IT has enabled the development of computer-aided manufacture (CAM). See also artificial intelligence
