base Chemical compound that accepts protons. A base will neutralise an
acid to form a
salt and water. Most are oxides or hydroxides of metals; others, such as ammonia, are compounds that yield hydroxide
ions in water. Soluble bases are called
alkalis. Strong bases fully dissociate into ions; weak bases partially dissociate in solution. See also
