Whitefield, George
Whitefield, George (1714–70) English evangelical preacher, an important figure in early
Methodism. In 1738, he made his first visit to America. Whitefield's stirring, open-air sermons contributed to the
Great Awakening. He broke from John
Wesley to form the Calvinistic Methodist Church.
