Victoria
Victoria (1819–1901) Queen of Great Britain and Ireland (1837–1901), Empress of India (1876–1901). A granddaughter of
George III, she succeeded her uncle,
William IV. In 1840, she married her first cousin, Prince Albert of
Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. During her reign, the longest in English history, the role of the monarchy was established as a ceremonial, symbolic institution, with virtually no power but much influence. Victoria learned statecraft from her first prime minister, Lord
Melbourne, and was greatly influenced by the hard-working Prince Albert. After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria went into lengthy seclusion and her neglect of public duties aroused republican sentiments. Her domestic popularity returned when she became Empress of India and with the golden (1887) and diamond (1897) jubilee celebrations. Among later prime ministers, she maintained excellent terms with Benjamin
Disraeli (who astutely flattered her) but was on frosty terms with William
Gladstone (who lectured her). She reigned over an Empire containing 25% of the world's people and 30% of its land. Britain's trade and industry made it the world's richest country.
