Utah State in the

Salt Lake City, other cities include Provo and Ogden. The region was ceded to the USA at the end of the
Mexican War in 1848, and Utah was admitted to the Union in 1896. The influence of the
Mormon Church is strong in the state, and in 1857–58 there were conflicts between federal troops and the Mormons. In the

e from the Great Basin, which includes the
Great Salt Lake. The arid climate hinders agriculture, but hay, barley, wheat, beans, and sugar beet grow with the aid of irrigation. The chief farming activity is stock raising. Mining is also important: there are rich deposits of copper, petroleum, coal, molybdenum, silver, lead, and gold. With many national parks and monuments, tourism is vital to the economy. Area: 219,931sq km (84,915sq mi). Pop. (2000) 2,233,169.
