St Lawrence Seaway

St Lawrence Seaway Waterway in Canada and the USA. Built in the 1950s, it connects the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The St Lawrence Seaway extends about 750km (470mi) from n of Montréal down to the n shore of Lake Erie. The main part of the waterway consists of a series of canals and locks that bypass the rapids along the St Lawrence River. The waterway also includes the Welland Canal, which by-passes the Niagara Falls. The St Lawrence Seaway allows ocean-going vessels to reach industrial lakeside ports of central North America, such as Detroit, Chicago, and Toronto.
