Saratoga, Battle of
Saratoga, Battle of (October 7, 1777) First American victory in the
American Revolution, fought in upper New York. In a series of battles, the Americans, led by Horatio
Gates, prevented the British from linking up with other forces at Albany and taking the Hudson valley. The Americans eventually surrounded the British, forcing them to surrender. The victory persuaded the French to intervene against Britain.
