Reagan, Ronald Wilson (1911– ) Fortieth US President (1981–89). A well-known film actor, he joined the Republican Party in 1962. Reagan won a landslide victory to become governor of California (1966–74). Nominated as presidential candidate at his third attempt in 1980, he defeated incumbent Jimmy Carter. In 1981, Reagan survived an assassination attempt. As president, he introduced large tax cuts and reduced public spending, except on defence. By the end of Reagan's second term, budget and trade deficits reached record heights. Fiercely anti-communist, he adopted strong measures against opponents abroad – invading Grenada (1983), and undermining the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. While pursuing his Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI, or ‘Star Wars’), Reagan reached a historic nuclear disarmament treaty (1987) with Mikhail Gorbachev that signalled an end to the Cold War. The Iran-Contra affair overshadowed the final year of his presidency. Vice President George Bush succeeded Reagan.
