Pasteur, Louis
Pasteur, Louis (1822–95) French chemist, one of the founders of
microbiology. His work on
bacteria led to the ‘germ theory’ of infection. In 1862, Pasteur discovered that microorganisms can be destroyed by heat, a technique now known as
pasteurization. He also found that he could weaken certain
disease-causing microorganisms, and then use the weakened culture to provide
immunity against the disease. In 1881, Pasteur produced the first
vaccines against
anthrax. In 1885, he produced a vaccine against
rabies. In 1885, the
Pasteur Institute was founded in Paris, France.
