Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da (1525–94) Italian composer who spent most of his life in the service of the Church. Palestrina wrote masses, magnificats, litanies, and c.600 motets in four to eight or twelve parts. He also composed almost 100 secular madrigals. His works include Missa Papae Marcelli (1567).
