Normandy Region and former province of
nw France, coextensive with the departments of Manche, Calvados, Orne, Eure, and Seine-Maritime. Part of the Roman province of Gaul, it was absorbed into the Frankish kingdom of Neustria in the 6th century. It was the seat of William, Duke of Normandy (later
William I), who invaded England in 1066. France recovered Normandy from the English in 1204. It was the site of the
Normandy Campaign. It is characterized by forests, flat farmlands and rolling hills. The economy is based on livestock rearing, dairy products, fruit, cider and fishing.
