Matthew, Gospel according to Saint

World Encyclopedia | Date: 2005

Matthew, Gospel according to Saint Gospel traditionally placed first in the New Testament but probably written after those of Saint Mark and Saint Luke. Written c.ad 70–75, it is traditionally ascribed to Saint Matthew, the tax gatherer who became one of the 12 disciples. The Gospel of Saint Matthew contains more of the teachings, parables and sayings of Jesus than any other gospel. It is also the only Synoptic Gospel written in a Jewish, rather than a Hellenistic, style.
