Haiphong
Haiphong Port on the Red River delta,
n Vietnam. Founded in 1874, Haiphong became the chief naval base of French Indochina. It was occupied by the Japanese during World War II and bombed by the French in 1946. During the Vietnam War it was heavily bombed by the USA, and its harbour was mined. Industries: cement, glass, chemicals. Pop. (1999) 1,672,992.
