Gothenburg

Gothenburg (Göteborg) City in sw Sweden where the River Göta joins the Kattegat; the country's chief seaport and second-largest city. Founded by Gustavus II (1619), it flourished as a commercial centre. Industries: shipbuilding, vehicles, chemicals, textiles. Pop. (2002) 474,298.
