Declaration of Independence
Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776) Statement of the principles with which the
Thirteen Colonies of North America justified the
American Revolution and separation from Britain as the United States of America. Its blend of high idealism and practical statements ensured its place as one of the world's most important political documents. The Declaration was drafted by a committee that included Thomas
Jefferson, and was based on the theory of
natural rights propounded by John
Locke to justify the
Glorious Revolution in England. It was approved by the Continental Congress on July 4. The Declaration states the necessity of government having the consent of the governed, of government's responsibility to its people, and contains the famous paragraph: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”.
