Dalton, John (1766–1844) English chemist, physicist, and meteorologist. He researched trade winds, the cause of rain, and the aurora borealis. He described colour blindness based on personal experience. His study of gases led to Dalton's law of partial pressures: the total pressure of a gas mixture is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases, provided no chemical reaction occurs. His atomic theory states that each element is made up of indestructible, small particles. He also constructed a table of relative atomic masses.
