Cuban Missile Crisis
Cuban Missile Crisis (October 1962) US and Soviet Union confrontation over the installation of Soviet nuclear rockets in Cuba, perhaps the closest the world has yet come to nuclear war. Photographs taken by US reconnaissance aircraft revealed the construction of ballistic missile bases in Cuba. President John F.
Kennedy warned Premier Nikita
Khrushchev that any missile launched from Cuba would be met by a full-scale nuclear strike on the Soviet Union. On October 24, Cuba-bound Soviet ships bearing missiles turned back, and Khrushchev ordered the bases to be dismantled.
