Aaron Copland
Copland, Aaron
Copland, Aaron (1900–90) US composer, especially known for combining folk and jazz elements with 20th-century symphonic techniques. His highly popular ballet music includes
Billy the Kid (1938),
Rodeo (1942) and
Appalachian Spring (1944), which won a Pulitzer Prize. He wrote symphonies, chamber music and overtly patriotic pieces such as
A Lincoln Portrait (1942). Less well known are Copland's experiments with serial techniques, as in
Piano Fantasy (1957). He was also a conductor and an admired teacher.
