Gauss, Karl Friedrich (1777–1855) A German mathematician, Gauss developed the study of spherical geometry, which is essential to the theory of plate tectonics. His major work, Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium (‘Theory of the Motion of Heavenly Bodies’) (1809), was on planetary movements. He also helped to initiate the international geomagnetic survey of 1834.
