Kanna Zen (Jap.; Chin., Kʾan-huachʾan). Zen based on the contemplation of words, a description of Zen in which the
kōan is pre-eminent. In time, it became virtually synonymous with
Rinzai, in contrast to
Sōtō, which was termed
mokushō zen.
