Indian Ecumenical Conference. A movement for spiritual renewal among N. American Indians. The meetings began on the Crow Reservation, Montana, in 1970, with those attending coming from Alaska to Florida, and from many religions (
Catholic,
Protestant,
Bahāʾī, traditional and the new religions of Handsome Lake, and the Native American Church). Attitudes have ranged from emphasis on ‘Red Power’ and anti-white, anti-Christian feelings, to more positive and forward-looking relationships with Christianity and W. culture.
