Gopī (Skt., ‘keeper of cows’). The women cowherds at Vṛndāvana, who are involved with Kṛṣṇa in the love-affairs of his youth. They come to symbolize, both the soul's devotion (bhakti) to God, and also the legitimacy of flouting convention in the service of God.
