niche. Shallow ornamental recess in a wall or
pier, usually to contain a statue,
urn, or other ornament. Classical niches are usually arched, sometimes with a quarter-spherical
head if semicircular on plan, and often with the half-dome carved to resemble a scallop-shell. Some niches are set within
aedicules, and
Gothic niches (called
tabernacles) have
gablets or canopies over them. A niche-grave is a loculus in a
hypogeum,
catacomb,
mausoleum, or a space in a
cinerarium or
ollarium.
