Leeds, William Henry (1786–1866). English architectural critic, his essays on public improvements in the
Companion to the Almanac (1838–50) were important. He published
Moller's Memorials of German Gothic (1836), a Supplement in
Britton and A. C.
Pugin's
Illustrations of the Public Buildings of London (1838),
The Travellers' Club House … and the Revival of the Italian Style (1839),
Railway Architecture (1848), and edited
A Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture by William Chambers (1862). His work on
The Travellers' Club did much to publicize the
Italianate style of
Barry, and he introduced words such as
cornicione to the architectural vocabulary.
