Gherardi, Antonio (1644–1702). Italian painter and architect, he remodelled the Avila Chapel, Santa Maria in Trastévere, Rome (
c.1686), in which space is magically extended in all directions, notably upwards, where angels carry a ring under the
cupola. Even richer is his Chapel of Santa Cecilia, San Carlo ai Catinari (1691–1702). The influences of
Bernini,
Borromini, and
Guarini were strong in his work.
