Eesteren, Cor(nelis) van

Eesteren, Cor(nelis) van (1897–1988). Dutch architect much influenced by Bauhaus ideas and by van Doesburg, with whom he drew up the architectural principles of Neo-Plasticism and the manifesto Vers une construction collective (Towards a Collective Construction—1924—also signed by Rietveld). He was involved in the De Stijl movement, and by 1929 was firmly within the Modernist camp that envisaged high-rise blocks and huge traffic arteries to replace traditional cities. He was responsible for the General Extension plan for Amsterdam (1936), where he was Chief Architect of the Town Planning Department for nearly half a century. He was president of CIAM (1930–47).
