Dudok, Willem Marinus (1884–1974). Am-sterdam-born Dutch military engineer, he became one of the most influential architects working in The Netherlands between the two World Wars. In 1915 he was appointed Director of Public Works at Hilversum, near Amsterdam, where he designed around 250 buildings, most of some distinction, and drew up the expansion-plan inspired by the English
Garden City movement. Initially, he was influenced by
Berlage, then by the
Amsterdam School, and, from
c.1920, by De
Stij. His masterpiece is Hilversum Town Hall (1924–30), which has certain similarities with the work of F. L.
Wright, and was particularly admired in Britain in the 1930s.
