La Jolla

La Jolla , on the Pacific Ocean, S Calif., an uninc. district within the confines of San Diego; founded 1869. The beautiful ocean beaches, in particular La Jolla shores and Black's Beach, and sea-washed caves attract visitors and year-round residents. The city has become a favorite retirement center as well as a prestigious residential area for San Diego professionals. The Univ. of California at San Diego (including the Scripps Institution of Oceanography), the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and a museum of contemporary art are in La Jolla. Torrey Pines State Reserve is nearby.
