Calixto García y Iñigues , 1839-98, Cuban revolutionist, a leader in the Ten Years War (1868-78). Captured and imprisoned until 1878, he entered upon revolutionary activities immediately after his release and was again arrested. In 1895 he went to the United States and shortly afterward played an important part in the revolution in Cuba and in the Spanish-American War, particularly distinguishing himself at El Caney. Sent as a member of a committee to discuss Cuban affairs with President McKinley in 1898, he died in Washington, D.C. Elbert Hubbard 's A Message to Garcia made his name a byword in the United States.
