write ring
write ring (write-permit ring) A ring that is attached to the hub of a reel of magnetic tape to permit its content to be overwritten or erased. When the reel is mounted on a tape transport the ring actuates a switch that permits the writing process. An interrupt is normally sent to the system if writing is attempted without the write ring.
