hazard and operability study (HAZOP) A systematic investigation covering all stages of the life cycle, whose purpose is to identify all possible situations that could lead to hazards (which have been previously identified) in a particular system, taking into account the environment in which it must operate. Usually the study involves the investigation of previous disasters or similar situations, using these to indicate areas of particular attention.
