bulletin board system (BBS) A teleconferencing system often run on a dedicated computer for use by enthusiasts who can connect their personal computers by means of modems and telephone lines or network connections. The bulletin board allows its users to post notices that they wish seen by other users on a variety of topics, to read the notices left by previous users, and to download software and information for use on their own systems. This latter activity is one of those blamed for the spread of computer viruses.
