symphysiotomy (sim-fizi-ot-ŏmi) n. the operation of cutting through the front of the pelvis at the pubic symphysis in order to enlarge the diameter of the pelvis and aid delivery of a fetus whose head is too large to pass through the pelvic opening. This procedure is now rarely employed.
