Orem's model (or-ĕmz) n. a model for nursing based on the self-care deficit theory of nursing, in which patients are seen as able, when they are well, to initiate and perform activities on their own behalf, in order to maintain life, health, and wellbeing. Infants, children, the elderly, the disabled, and the ill may require assistance or complete care with these activities. See also nursing models. [ D. Orem (1914– ), US nurse theorist]
