litre (symbol l or L) Metric unit equal to a cubic decimetre, one thousandth of a cubic metre. Another definition, used from 1901 to 1968, was that one litre equalled the volume of one kilogramme of pure water at 4°C (39°F). A litre is equivalent to 0.22 imperial gallons or 0.264 US gallons.
