Girdlestone's operation (ger-d'l-stohnz) n. an operation in which the head of the femur and part of the acetabulum are removed and a mass of muscle is sutured between the bone ends. It is performed for osteoarthritis. [ G. R. Girdlestone (1881–1950), British surgeon]
