bipolar affective disorder
bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) n. a severe mental illness causing repeated episodes of depression, mania, or mixed affective state. Mood stabilizers (e.g. lithium) are used to prevent or lessen future episodes; combinations of mood stabilizers and antidepressant or antipsychotic medication may be used in more severe cases.
