SIDELIGHTS:

Timothy B. Smith is an academic. Born in 1967, Smith is married and has five children. He began his higher education studies in the late 1980s, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from Brigham Young University in 1991. He pursued the majority of his graduate studies at Utah State University in Logan. He earned a total of three master's degrees in his academic career. The first master's degree was in counseling psychology in 1993. This was followed two years later by completing a master's degree in sociology. Smith then studied abroad at Rhodes University in South Africa, earning in 1996 a third master's degree, this time in research psychology. Upon completion of his studies in South Africa, he returned to Utah State University, where he completed a doctorate degree in professional psychology.

Smith began lecturing at Brigham Young University in 1999 and eventually became an associate professor in the department of counseling and special education. His research interests include studies on life span and social support, multicultural psychology, and the adapting and upgrading of mental health practices for non-Caucasian ethnic groups in North America. Smith edited his first book, Practicing Multiculturalism: Affirming Diversity in Counseling and Psychology, in 2004.
