See index for CA sketch: Born January 27, 1934, in New York, NY; died May 12, 2007, in San Diego, CA. Psychologist, educator, and author. A professor and clinical psychologist, Smith wrote several self-help books about overcoming feelings of fear and guilt. He served in the military during the Korean War, then earned B.A. and M.S. degrees from San Diego State College in 1959 and 1960. His Ph.D. was completed at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1966. Already a research psychologist at the university since 1960, he began to teach in 1967 and was made a full professor of psychology in 1970. Also establishing his own private practice, Smith taught at UCLA until his 1994 retirement. Smith gained considerable attention in 1975 when he released his first book, When I Say No, I Feel Guilty: How to Cope, Using the Skills of Systematic Assertive Therapy. This was followed by similar books, including Yes, I Can Say No: A Parent's Guide to Assertiveness Training for Children (1986) and When I Say No, I Feel Guilty, Volume II, for Managers and Executives (2000). He was also the author of Kicking the Fear Habit: Using Your Automatic Orienting Reflex to Unlearn Your Anxieties, Fears, and Phobias (1977) and Here Be Dragons (2002).
