Higginbotham, John E. 1933-2007

OBITUARY NOTICE—

See index for CA sketch: Born February 28, 1933, in Bradford, Yorkshire, England; died of cancer, January 16, 2007. Educator and author. Higginbotham was founding headmaster of Leicester Grammar School. He attended Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he earned a B.A. in 1957 and an M.A. in 1961. His first appointment was at Lancing College in Sussex in 1957. Hired as assistant master, he was promoted to head of the department of classics in 1963 and housemaster of Teme House in 1970. In 1981, he left Lancing College to be headmaster at Leicester Grammar School, where he taught both Russian and the classics. He was also the translator of Cicero on Moral Obligation: A New Translation of Cicero's "De Officiis" (1967) and editor of Greek and Latin Literature: A Comparative Study (1973).
