COHEN, Florence Chanock 1927-2003


OBITUARY NOTICE—See index for CA sketch: Born February 14, 1927, in Pittsburgh, PA; died of cancer January 19, 2003, in Evanston, IL. Educator and author. Cohen is best known for penning fiction through which she explored the Arab-Israeli dynamic. Her books include the novel Portrait of Deborah, the nonfiction title Freedom Next Time, and the award-winning short-story collection The Monkey Puzzle Tree. Her 1993 novel Sea of Stones follows an American women's journey to Israel in 1982 on a quest that leads her into war-torn Lebanon. Cohen wrote many short stories during her career, including some that were published in such journals as New Outlook, Prairie Schooner, Society, and Yankee. She also taught creative writing classes at Northwestern University.
