Young [Youngs], (Basil) Alexander (b London, 1920; d Macclesfield, 2000). Eng. tenor. Opera début with Glyndebourne co. at Edinburgh Fest. 1950 (Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos, 1st vers.). Wide repertory in opera, Lieder, and songs. Chosen by Stravinsky to sing Tom Rakewell in recording of The Rake's Progress, 1964 (which he had sung 1953 in f. Eng. p. (BBC studio perf.). CG 1955–70. Head of Sch. of Vocal Studies, RNCM, 1973–86. Fine singer of Handel, Ferrando. Founder and cond., Jubilate Choir, Manchester, 1977.
